David Simpson : writer and broadcaster
David is a former journalist with over twenty years experience in editing, publishing, writing, broadcasting and communication. He has worked as an editor of several magazines, including a magazine for people with disabilities and has been a newspaper columnist and researcher. David runs two popular websites and is the author of sixteen books.
He has long had a passion for history and particularly that of northern England, though his most recent projects include a book on Scotland and a book about London.
David regularly writes and broadcasts on history. His television appearances include Ant and Dec's History of Tyneside (ITV), The Face of Britain (on Channel 4 with Neil Oliver), The One Show (BBC1 with Phil Tuffnel), Northern Eye (ITV), North East Tonight (ITV with Mike Neville), Wayward Women (ITV with various celebrities), How they Built Britain (History Channel with Adam Hart Davis), Martina Cole’s Lady Killers (ITV) and Countrywise (BBC1 with Bettany Hughes).
He has featured in over a hundred radio appearances including Radio 4, Five Live, Canadian radio, Australian radio, Radio Newcastle etc.
David has presented over two hundred public speaking engagements to a wide variety of organisations and venues including speaking groups, women’s groups, book launches, literary festivals, schools, colleges and professional societies. His speaking
style is described as lively, engaging, informative, amusing, theatrical and entertaining.
He likes to spend his spare time with his daughter and has an interest in photography. Most of the photographs on this site were taken by him. He likes eating out, travel, British history, local history, walking, cycling, golf, acting at a local theatre, writing, dialect, place-name origins, going out in Durham and Newcastle and inspiring people, particularly young people to learn about the places in which they live.
David has worked in tourism hospitality, marketing, journalism and press relations and has managerial, administrative and entrepreneurial skills. Hey, this is starting to read like a CV - that's a resume by the way, for our American visitors.
For many years David was a popular columnist. A published book based on his column was publically praised by the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
As a young man David owned a publishing business set up and backed by the Prince's Youth Business Trust and he personally presented some of his early published works to the Prince of Wales.
David has experience in tourism having worked at Beamish Open Air Museum and the National Garden Festival in Gateshead. While working at the National Garden Festival he gave tours to visitors including foreign ministers, company directors, school children from Chernobyl, local mayors and other visitors.
In the past he has hosted and performed humorous guided tours for conferences with actors portraying characters from history. Most recently he has become a key member of the northumbriatrails.com tourism team, headed by Canadian-based Tyneside businesswoman, Hazel Anderson. This fantastic new venture plays host to North American tourists on luxury visits to Northumberland and Durham.
David currently works for My World Publishing, a new publishing company that's part of the well-established leighton group in Sunderland. Here's the link to the My World Publishing website.
Here David has recently published (in May 2011) a book about Sunderland called 'My Sunderland' (an idea instigated by the then football club chairman, Niall Quinn) and this was followed up in November 2011 with a book about Scotland called My Scotland. All the details can be found below. David hosted the Sunderland book launch at the local stadium with invited guests, dignitaries and local schoolchildren and hosted the launch of the Scotland book at bookshops in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
David is now writing and developing further titles in this series of quirky, family-friendly books. The next will feature London followed by titles on Ireland, Wales, Yorkshire etc.
David's England's North East website is constantly under development. The site has been described by former Guardian Deputy Editor, David Mckie as “entertaining and erudite”. Its sister site is the yorkshire-england.co.uk website that will soon be accompanied by a new website about London to be called englandscapital.co.uk. David owns domains covering Wales (cymruwales.co.uk), as well as englandsmidlands.co.uk, englandseast.co.uk, englandsnorth.co.uk, englandssouth.co.uk, scotlandslowlands.co.uk, scotlandshighlands.co.uk all of which he hopes to develop in the near future.
.
David was born in Durham, but as a bairn lived in the station house at Chester-le-Street railway station. For a number of years he resided at Eaglescliffe near the town of Yarm on the fringe of Yorkshire. Later he toured for a time with a band called The Whisky Priests as a drummer, though he would never claim his talents lay in that direction.
David has undertaken various research projects for tourism development companies and has been an actor with Durham City Theatre and Durham Shakespeare Group in a whole host of different roles.
In 1999 David published The Millennium History of North East England, a year-by-year chronological history of the region. This work was praised by the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair in December 1999 in connection with his Millennium Address to the Nation.

by David Simpson
Business Education Publishers Limited
ISBN ISBN 978 1 901888 58 4
176 pages including 16 pages of colour inserts Price £12.95
Chester-le-Street and Washington features the remarkable history of two North East towns. One has a history stretching back to Roman and Saxon times and was once the spiritual capital of the region long before Durham or Newcastle rose to prominence. The other is a new town embracing older communities like the ancestral home of the Washington family. Here too are some of the oldest industrial riverside communities of the region.
As well as the two towns the book also covers Beamish, Pelton, No Place, Kibblesworth, Ravensworth, Waldridge, Penshaw, Lumley, Lambton Park, Bournmoor and Birtley. It is a history encompassing Saxon bishops, Eric Bloodaxe, Daniel Defoe, Radical Jack, iron works, sweet factories, pit disasters, riotous football and first class cricket. It is a history of castles, halls, mansions, dukes and earls, nobles and rebels, political reformers and a Scottish earl who came to hide.
The story includes hippos, lions, and a worm with a twist in its tale, a famous painting, a buxom landlady recalled in song and a mischievous goblin. There are smuggling bandits, keelmen, pitmen, a Greek monument, a Roman viaduct and even the remarkable female founder of Iraq who hailed from Washington. Whether you are a visitor, exile, local, or just curious you will find this is a land with many surprising stories to tell.

Durham City (November 2006)
by David Simpson
Business Education Publishers Limited
ISBN ISBN 978 1 901888 50 8
192 pages including 16 pages of colour inserts Price £12.95
Durham City is based on the Durham Memories column that appears in The Northern Echo newspaper and features the history of Durham City and its surrounding suburbs. It includes the historic city centre with all its wonderful buildings and wealth of history but also visits the city's outer reaches, where Framwellgate Moor, Pity Me, Crossgate Moor, Neville's Cross, Gilesgate Moor and Carrville and many places besides are explored.
Throughout the book, colourful characters that have inhabited the city, such as the oversized actor Stephen Kemble, the eccentric mayor called 'Icy' Smith and a tiny man called Joseph Boruwlaski, are recollected. Whilst on the more sinister side the notorious inmates of Durham Prison and the hangings at Dryburn are documented. Homage is paid to the occasional shop, pub and church and of course the University of Durham, along with South Road, with its nineteenth century mansions and forgotten roadside inns hidden amongst the colleges of today.
The names of influential people that lived in and around the city in grand mansions such as Western Lodge, Dryburn and Springwell Hall are also uncovered. Whether you are a visitor, a local or an exile, it is hoped that you will enjoy this journey through the history of Durham City.
